A shoeshine man.
A barber.
A husband.
A father.
A grandfather.
A mentor.
A humanitarian.
A man who wanted to be a boxer himself.
You were all that and much more to so many people.
You built your own ring—
and that's where it began.
You poured into your community without knowing just how far what you planted would travel.
You taught more than boxing.
You taught skating.
You taught respect.
You taught discipline.
You taught movement.
You taught the science of the sport.
You were a foundation.
You were vulnerable, yet valuable.
You were love, and you received love.
You gave young people somewhere to come, somewhere to learn, and someone who expected something of them.
You were a piece on your community's chessboard whose influence would eventually move across the world.
And yet, for all that you poured into others, you did not receive all of the flowers your legacy deserved while you were here to smell them.
You were the root of fruit the world would come to know.
And so, this foundation bears your name—not simply to look back, but to make certain that what you planted continues to grow.
Through this foundation, we honor others while they are still here to witness the fruit of their labor—to reap what they have sown, receive their flowers, and continue planting seeds for those who will come after them.
Because a legacy should not have to wait until someone is gone to be recognized.
This is your dedication. This is your legacy. And these are your flowers.
Know someone whose roots run just as deep? Give them their flowers while they're still here to smell them.
